Betting an NBA game usually means choosing between three markets: moneyline, spread and total. All three follow the same read-the-price-then-multiply arithmetic, and knowing how to bet on NBA games mostly comes down to keeping those three straight and checking the sportsbook’s own rules for anything the league itself doesn’t decide, like whether overtime counts.

Moneyline is a straight bet on who wins the game, no margin involved. Spread, also called a handicap, adds or subtracts points from the final score to level a mismatched game. How to bet on NBA moneylines, worked

A moneyline price reflects how likely the sportsbook rates each side to win outright. Say the favorite prices at 1.40 and the underdog at 3.20: a ₱100 stake on the favorite returns ₱140, ₱40 profit, while the same ₱100 on the underdog returns ₱320, ₱220 profit, if it wins. Nothing about the margin of victory matters to a moneyline bet, only who wins.

Spread betting basketball: covering the handicap

A spread levels a mismatched game by adding or subtracting points before the final score counts. If the favorite is priced at -6.5 and wins 102-100, a 2-point margin, a -6.5 bet loses because the margin fell short of 6.5; the underdog’s +6.5 bet wins instead. At odds of 1.90 on that +6.5 line, a ₱200 stake returns ₱380, ₱180 profit. The half-point exists specifically so the spread bet can’t push: someone wins outright every time.

Over under basketball: betting the total

A total line of 224.5 asks only whether the two teams’ combined score clears that number, regardless of who wins. If the final score is 118-112, the combined total is 230, so an Over bet at 1.90 wins: ₱100 staked returns ₱190. A final combined score of 220 would settle the Under side instead, at whatever price it carried.

What overtime does to a spread or total

An NBA game runs four quarters of 12 minutes each; if the score is tied at the end of regulation, the league plays overtime periods of 5 minutes each until the tie breaks, under the NBA’s own Rule No. 5 on scoring and timing. Whether that overtime score counts toward a spread or total you already bet is a rule the sportsbook sets, not the league. Read the rules page before assuming overtime is included or excluded.
